Introduction

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an archipelago located in the Bay of Bengal, in the heart of the Andaman Sea. They are composed of more than 200 islands and islets and are part of the mountain range that runs from Indonesia to Burma but politically they are part of India.

That they are Indian territory is only a circumstantial matter. Although the islands were always poblanos by tribal groups were the English who rediscovered them in the era of the East Indian Company (British Company of the East Indies). They were used as a prison and detention center, being the Siberia of the English colony.

Today the native population of the islands is isolated from contact with tourists and with a strong danger of extinction. The rest of the islands were populated with refugees from the civil war that happened along with the Independence of India. Therefore, most of the inhabitants are Bengali, Tamil, and Bangladeshi.

Beyond these political and introductory questions, the Andaman Islands are a true paradise yet to be discovered.

How to reach Andaman and Nicobar?

Since these are islands separated by more than 1,000 kilometers from the Indian continent, there are only two ways to get there: plane or boat.

Airplane

Only domestic flights arrive, so you can only fly from India. Most of the big cities have direct flights to Port Blair. The cheapest and most accessible is to fly from Calcutta or Chennai since it only takes two hours to arrive.

The more anticipated flights are taken, the cheaper they are. Also, the price varies according to the time of year. Some of the companies that operate are IndiGo, Spice Jet and Air India.

Ship

It is not a short journey, it is not easy to get tickets, and it is not the cleanest and tedious of the world but arriving by boat to the Andaman Islands is a unique and unforgettable experience.

Porto Blair, the capital city of the islands is connected maritimely with three cities: Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Vizag (Andhra Pradesh) and Calcutta (West Bengal). By month there is usually a round trip to each city, in high season there are usually two or three journeys a month.

To book tickets you need to go personally to any Shipping Corporation of India office.

To buy the ticket it is necessary to take photocopies of the passport. We recommend that you buy tickets in advance as they tend to run out very quickly (especially Bunk Class).

The prices may vary Deluxe 9280 INR, First Class 6110 INR and Bunk Class 2380 INR. ( the price can be changed )

Deluxe Class is a double cabin with private bathroom. Sheets, shower with hot water, cabinets, and armchairs. First Class is similar to Deluxe but the cabins are for four people. Therefore, one may share the room with more passengers.

Bunk Class, however, is located in the ship's hold and is a large compartment with between five hundred and nine hundred berths depending on the ship. In Bunk Class, the bathrooms are separated into men and women and are no man's land. Hygiene does not abound, the air does not circulate and going to the bathroom can be a terrifying experience but the hospitality of the people and the price differences with the upper classes means that all this takes a back seat.

Each boat has a dining room, a common resting area, and long decks to breathe fresh and marine air. Both the eating and the common area are divided between Bunk class passengers and the upper classes.

The trip in boat usually lasts between three to five days depending on the city from which you depart and the intermediate stops made by the ship.

Water, chai, cookies, and snacks are sold on board the ship. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are also served. In general, it is usually a thali that is repeated from food to food.
